Lecture - Chinese Mythology

Chinese Myths and Legends introduces the stories of deities, heroes and the origins of the universe that underpin the spirit of traditional Chinese culture.

The people of China have a rich and complicated mythology that dates back nearly 4,000 years. Throughout Chinese history, myth and reality have been intertwined.

Chinese Myths and Legends introduces the stories of deities, heroes and the origins of the universe that underpin the spirit of traditional Chinese culture. Historical figures have been worshiped as gods, and ancient myths are sometimes treated as historical truths. In addition, three great religious traditions—Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism—have played a role in shaping the mythology. The result is a rich tapestry of characters and tales, both real and imagined, and a unique pantheon organized very much like ancient Chinese society.

Utilising a variety of ancient Chinese sources, we will examine the origin and development of myths and legends in China, including both well-known and less familiar traditions, and you could compare these traditions to the mythology of the ancient western world.
