Hangzhou Tea Plantation Tour

Tea's central role in Chinese culture and history shapes the course of this tea tour and tasting in Hangzhou.

Tea's central role in Chinese culture and history shapes the course of this tea tour and tasting in Hangzhou. In this trip, we'll learn the basics of different teas, how they're grown, their use in cuisine and ritual, and some of the subtleties of tea appreciation. We will also have the chance to experience the Chinese high speed train during this trip and learn about the train system in China.

Why Hangzhou? Situated in a fertile area of the delta southwest of Shanghai, Hangzhou is renown for its particular variety of green tea, the most ubiquitous type of tea consumed in China. It is also home to one of the top tea science institutes in the country. As a result, it's the perfect place for learning about and sampling tea. Our program begins in West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Hangzhou, originally constructed as a park for the emperor and dotted with pagodas, the park offers a wonderful example of Chinese landscape architecture. We will enjoy the most famous Hangzhou food nearby the lake. After lunch we will move on to visit the Tea Museum(Open Tue-Sun) and go to Long Jing village where one of the most famous green teas - Dragon Well Green Tea is grown. We will also visit the tea garden(RMB10) where the Chinese emperor owns, learn how Dragon Well Green Tea is fired in a wok. During this unique day trip, we'll learn about tea in Chinese history and culture, learn the tricks behind making a great cup of Chinese tea and have a taste of the most famous green tea.

In the end, if you wish to extend the tour till evening(extra cost applies and advanced booking is needed), we'll visit Dragon Well Manor for dinner, recommended by Fuchsia Dunlop, she is a cook and food-writer specialising in Chinese cuisine, the author of Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper Tea. Over there, fresh seasonal local organic produce is used in recipes, food is prepared in ancient traditional Chinese style and you will have a whole different way to enjoy its fragrance and flavor. The cost of a set menu is starting around RMB2000 per table.
