Shanghai's Jewish History Tour
Jewish life in Shanghai dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, enhance your trip to China by taking a tour illustrating the remarkable history of Jews in Shanghai.
Tour starts at the Peace Hotel (formerly the Cathay Hotel, built by Sir Victor Sassoon) on Shanghai's famous Bund riverfront, visit bund origin and hotel's of the Kadoorie family. Take in magnificent views of the city and learn about the Baghdadi-Jewish legacy of the city.
After that, your guide will take you to the Hongkou district, also known as the Shanghai Ghetto. In the Hongkou district, you will visit various places including the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum (Ohel Moshe Synagogue) and a monument in Huoshan Park. In addition, your guide will take you to explore the back lanes of the district and to visit local houses where Jewish refugees used to live.
At lunch time, try the local food or we will take you for a kosher lunch at Shanghai Jewish Center - an active Jewish community in Shanghai, China. It is comprised of international professionals, businessmen and entrepreneurs of various backgrounds and affiliations. there is an active Jewish community in Shanghai, China. Together with a local rabbi, you will enjoy a guided tour visiting the Synagogue, regardless of affiliation knowledge of Hebrew and level of commitment.
After that, we will visit shanghai’s lost foreigner cemeteries. Most shanghai’s old cemeteries were first neglected and later destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The graves that were left were consolidated at the Wanguo Cemetery in Hongqiao, now part of the Soong Ching Ling Mausoleum. Some original graves lie here as well, including Sir Elly Kadoorie & Lady Laura, who died trying to save their children’s nanny in a fire.
In the end of the tour, we will go back to the bund and visit the former British club and the famous long bar.
